How is this done and what does it cost?
I always assumed you bought a plate off the DVLA website then you were free to put it on the car but have recently been told otherwise. So on top of what you pay on the website what else do you have to do?

That's what I thought, but someone has now told me that after purchasing the plates you also need to pay to put it on, and then also pay to get the old plate taken off!

The other websites have to buy it from the DVLA and then add the costs onto that. So if you cut them out and buy it from the DVLA its cheaper.
You should receive your certificate of entitlement within a few days / weeks.
All you do is pop the current reg on the form along with the day the tax runs out then send or take it to your local office, along with the log book MOT and copy of your tax disc.
They then take 7-14 days to apply the reg number (they used to do it over the counter)
Then you get a form that enables you to get your new number plates made up and a new tax disc and you will receive your new log book in a few weeks

You only need to pay to take your old plates off if you want to keep that reg number. Then its 105 to pop it onto a certificate.
Providing you put the plate straight on the car there wont be any additional costs.
If you take a year to do it you have to pay £25 to keep the number plate.
Or if you want to put the plate onto a car registered in another name its £25 to add them as a nominee
