Is there actually any point in blocking them off? Apart from if you have a dodgy one?

They're there for economic reasons so im guessing cutting that from 'getting the right mix of gases for the environment' chain should release a little more power that this process stops.

sorry if this has already been answered but is there actually any point in doing this unless your egr is faulty?

Please no-one use a can of coke. It won't last long due to not being thick enough and it'll soon blow a hole through it. I've done it before and you definitely need something thicker.

I used the coke can method, worked fine for over 20K miles. the egr gasses arent hot enough to burn through it.
