I got a letter through yesterday saying that i've been selected for trials in rowing for the 2012 olympics.

The trials are on the 28th July so i best get down the gym and get fit I know i wont get through, but it would be a waste not to go for it.

I'm well excited

Thanks

I dont think i'll be good enough for it either. But it says that you dont need to have any experience of rowing or anything. Just looking to see if you have the characteristics to be a performer in the future.

Quite nervous though. There's gonna be people that actually row, and are big built. And i'm neither of those

How come you got selected if you aren't a rower? Are you good at another sport?

I was thinking this!!

Are we so desperate for rowers that we are giving out trials to everyone and anyone?!!

Was to do with being tall and possibly having hidden talents. Taller people have an advantage at rowing.

Never rowed in my life, used to play footie. Dont do any sport now except gym.

What are they going to base it on to put you through other than your current size?

As surely they could take most people and make them decent rowers in 5 years!

cosmo have you seen the size of jay his height already gives him an advantage as his stroke while rowing is alot bigger than say someone who is 5'8".

its just the fitness and he is on his way tbh thats the hard part. If you look at most rowers they are usualy not below 6ft

No Im not saying what did they pick him in particular, just generally wondering what they are going to look for considering the vast majority wont of rowed before.

Well there will be quite a few tests done on the day to find out strength, stamina etc. Bassically, i've been selected because of my height , i'll take the 3 hour test and see if they think i could be succesful.

If they think you could be, then you get recalled for a 10 week training course. After that, if they still think you've got what it takes you will be allocated a full time coach and highly structured training programme.

exactly right, tall people have an extreme advantage in rowing for the longer strokes. im 6ft7ish too if i stand straight, technique etc can be taught. they are testing for fitness levels and whether or not your body can handle it i guess.

people are saying this is discriminatory only aiming it at taller people, but its no different from smaller people being jockeys.

good luck man!
