Following on from my Sky audio output thread, I changed my mind and decided to just buy a decent hi fi system (not for Sky only, but because I don't have one and I will be moving out in the near future!).

I don't want some cheap shit, and at the same time don't want to spend stupid money, anyone recommend a good make? Or a good magazine to check reviews on etc.?

I'm clueless when it comes to this kinda thing, I just want something that will sound decent, that I can plug in a record player and Sky box into, and that looks nice, without spending stupid money!

Erm dunno... Is £500 too little for a good mid-range system?

I'd say £500 was more than enough for a decent system. My technics setup was a bit cheaper than that and it's ace

£500 should get you some good kit, don't forget to budget for speaker cables & interconnects as well

EDIT - also worth checking here: http://whathifi.com/Default.aspx

You don't have to spend much.

Richer Sounds if you've have one near you. You could save a lot of money not buying every part either. I only have a tuner, CD player and amp in my living room, no tape deck, EQ or any messing like that.

Don't even need the CD as most pre-recorded stuff is MP3'd up already. Never use the discs.

Buy Hi Fi Choice magazine, they usually have good reviews of new equipment.

I have found the speakers make the most difference, so spend the most of the budget on these as you can.
