We've got a cat (Bella 2 yrs old). Today we got a new kitten (lillie 8wks old)

Both are females, and since introducing them, Bella hasn't really taken to lillie. She's constantly watching her when they're around each other, and growls at her. Anyone with experience shed any light on what to do, is it basically a time thing, and eventually they'll get used to each other, or do you think Bella is going to continue intimidating lillie. Being totally serious now, can anyone recommend/give any advice on how to work through this situation.

Yeah and i know it's only early but we don't know what to do about sleeping arangements etc. Is it going to be safe to leave the kitten upstairs around bella, or should we leave them be seperate tonight, (bella upstairs, Lillie downstairs), or is it more recommended to leave them to it naturally rather than seperate them

let them roam free around the house together.

i have 3 cats, didn't get on at all at first but just let them do their own thing and they eventually became best friends (lick eachother and stuff lol)

she won't eat the kitten don't worry

get a blanket that the older one has slept on loads,

and rub it all over the kitten loads.

so the scent of the older one is on the kitten, then she will be more at ease

also dont tell the older one off for growling etc, itll make her worse. if she hits its, bites etc just make sure that if she gets really bad jsut split them up dont hit or shout at them

they have to sort out who is the boss/ pecking order, so the older one is just laying down the law as it were.

hope this helps.

ps ive had 3 cats, 1 dog, all fine with each other,

all introduced at different times

now only have 2 cats left, they still fight, but its more of a play than anything now, they never hurt each other.

and all mine are rescue so all have chip on thier shoulder or sommit wrong with em,

This was my fear She tends to watch the kitten (kitten is shitting itself at this point) then she growls at it etc. Bella hasn't ounced or anything, just tends to watch it and is very wary of it.

That's sound advice mate. We kinda thought the same thing, that bella is laying down the law so it were. But you know what it's like, this kitten has just come into a strange new house, is tiny, then this huge cat is growling at her, and although we haven't intervened, can't help feeling tight for the little thing

two of my cats always fight but it's only play fighting, they only hit with their paws, no claws showing.

it's all part of them growing up and getting used to eachother.

as adam said, it's all about the scent, that's why you get the cat pissing everywhere (spraying) to mark out their territory to warn others off.

they should be fine, just leave them together for a night and bet they will be asleep next to eachother in the morning.

only thing you can do is keep an eye on it, also dont lock the older one out of an area of the house, cos itll take it out on the kitten.

as soon as the older one knows its not getting kicked out, or has to give up anything, itll be fine. 2 weeks and theyll be play fighting, chasing etc.

My mum and dad introduced two kittens to a three year old and they got on eventually. Took a little time as I remember.

So would you recommend bringing the little one upstairs tonight with the biggun, just keep it natural as it were?

Do whatever you normally do, but do the same with the new one too.

I have 5 cats, 3 of them are 18months old now and we have just got Tilly and Zippy (8 weeks) 2 weeks ago

My 2 older boys, Salem and Sooty, took to the newbies almost immediatley however Sasha (female) hated them.

Its taken 2 weeks for her to take to them, which is lucky, as my mums cat Dotty has never taken to the kittens they got 2 years ago!!

Depends on temperament of each cat IMO

Sasha's just fucking stupid though.

Plays fetch, doesnt like being picked up

Only gives you attention when she wants food, and she has stinky breath.

It just takes time, they have to get used to having another THING around them.

It'll be very daunting to them at first. we have 5 cats which have been introduced to each other. except 2 which were brothers from the start.

yes, can take 3 weeks for cats to be ok around each other, they are very territorial, introduce the kittens smell around the house.

older cats are actually more scared of kittens than other older cats

That's a good point that Steve, we noticed today that the new kitten was growing in confidence and going right near our cat, and the cat seemed very jumpy as if she was nervous. General observations are that things are a lot better than yesterday, but as said, i gues it'll just take time
