Just sold something on ebay and the person wants pay by personal cheque how does this work is it like a normal cheque?

I paid £239 (cheque) for something on ebay which i never got  I hate the people that do this it's not right!

Our next door neighbours did that. They sold the car for 3 grand and then the cheque bounced. Police found the car but it had been sold to a garage and then on to a young girl. The car was taken from her, our next door neighbour got the car back and the poor innocent girl lost her money. I don't know why it works like that but i think that it out of order!!

I've paid by cheque before when my account was waiting to be validated. I e mailed the seller to let them no payment wouldn't be instant LOL
