if you were going to buy a car with this engine what would you look for to tell that it is in good condition and what would put you off?

smoking, tapping, knocking, leaks, blue smoke when booting it etc,

Pull a spark plug out and check its condition. If there is a load of oil fouling or mechanical damage dont bother!
Take off oil filler cap and see if it looks like custard. If it does...dont bother!
Take a look at exhaust smoke, if there is alot of black or blue smoke, dont bother!
