I'm putting some 17" on the A3 and would like to know whether it makes any negative difference putting wider rear tyres...
getting 235/45 at the rear and 225/45 front

I had wider rear tyres on my mr2, the wheel shop told me to do so as all the weight is accross the back & wider tyres would help traction.
I wouldnt think there would be much reasoning for fitting wide rear tyres to a front engined fwd car.
