Afternoon folks, I'm sure theres a fair few folk that will be able to help out on here..
Basically I have my fitness and theory tests for the Fire Brigade on the 19th..
The theory part doesnt bother me in the slightest but basically I can't run.. lol
I am fine on a bike etc but I find that when I run my stamina is crap.. any advice is welcome.. cheers

start training 5 weeks ago!
Basically just start running until then. You'll have the fitness so just a matter of getting used to running.

Lol I have been training mate but I do a lot of mountain biking.. running just doesn't interest me..
I've been out running evry day this week and I am feeling better for it, just seam to struggle a fair bit more..

Well I can run, I'm just shit at it compared to other things. Not sure whether theres anything I can do when I'm out runbning to help me or that..

Just thought if it was something specific like shin splints .etc we could help out a lot easier.
What is it you have to run in the test? Isn't it just Hose Running and/or bleep test?

Just go on a treadmill or a cross trainer every day. If you work hard on them your fitness level goes up so quickly

not to jump in the thread or anything, but how do you overcome shin splints?
i get them when i go for runs and have had to stop for a while as it got quite bad!
ive been told it could be the trainers i have causing them, and should just get a pair of trainers purely for running?

I used to have real bad shin splints, but managed to sort them out by resting my shins for 6 weeks, no impact sports e.g. running .etc in that time, more rowing and x-trainer for cardio.
I then changed my footwear, went to a shop in MK and had them analyse my running style for a shoe that suited me.... Made a whole word of difference, they ask how far you run a week and match up lots of characteristics to a suitable shoe. Expensive but worth it

Just stick to the jogging, and keep at it. Runners don't train on bikes, and Cylcists don' train by running, you just have to keep it specific, you will see better gains that way. Also you don't need to knacker yourself out, run at a stead pace for long durations, as in hours not minutes! it's hard because it is boring but it will be the best in the long run for your cardiovascular system.

The bleep test is something pathetic like level 7-8 isn't it? Anyone with a semi half decent fitness level can blitz that.

kano i'm applyin for the fire services as well. the fitness test will be hard. im not worried about the lifting or anything but im the same as you i get bored when im running.

But you don't need to run far in the physical as far as I was aware anyway, its more shorter distances? Can't get too bored

aaaah yeah! someone had mentioned that shop to me! could be worth the extra pennies if it stops the pain! looks like im going to MK saturday then! 
never knew about the stretch for the front of the shin! will try that at footy on sunday!

Level 9.6 mate, its quite hard for me just because I dont like running and havent done much in the past..
Cam1... you say your applying, where for? Only place I found this year was Tayside and Perth that were recruiting..

Furry muff, you need to do some training tbh shuttle runs would be a good idea mate
You probably want to focus on short bursts of intense exercise, I often do a row of 8 x 100m's on level 6, should average 16-17 secs per 100m... with a 30 sec rest in between! That'll make you sweat! Then get on some weights.
Hill sprints are another, run to the top and jog back down then repeat...
