i had an interview at renault last wends got a letter through offering me an apprenticeship as a service technician it would take 3 years to get fully qualified and i wouldnt go to college they would send me to doncaster to there training centre for a couple of wks.

they said my salary would be £6,000.00 per annum, is it just me or does that seem hardly anything, £500 pr month without tax and ni taken off me so roughly £400 pr month (at a guess) and my parents are sayin that i have to pay £200 pr month to live at home so im going to have hardly anything each month,

would £6,000.00 sound resonable or not as an apprentice?

you get £5k tax free allowance so only 1k of that would be taxable @ 22%

I wouldn't do it, its not enough money but if thats the going rate for apprenticeship then take it

Talk to your parents about rent, im sure they can drop it seeing as youll be on a shitty wage, you could get a second job like nath says but prepair to be tired alot

You've got to start somewhere & no company is ever going to pay an apprentice lots of money because they wont be making anything from them for 3 years til there quallified + the training costs alot.

Im about to start an apprenticeship as a Offshore Instrument / Electrical Technician (im 25 by the way) Pay for the fist 18 months is £90 a week, then next 12 months it rises to £16.5k, then following year £20k then im time served after 3 years & the pay rises again to around £50k.

What im saying is you've got to take the shit pay for a while, learn the job, prove to them your worth the big money!!

it does i read it wrong i may not get it within the first year but if you are ages between 19 and 21 you get the reduced rate which is £4.45,i still might have it wrong but thats how i understood it...thats the site i got it from too http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/employment/rights_to_pay.htm

You will probably get a rise every year, I dont think they will be able to do anything else req. pay in the 1st year though other than whats been offered.

You know how much it costs to train an apprentice, get them all there qualifications etc??? The company im getting a start with have to pay £90k in training fees over the 3.5yrs.

No worries. £6k a year was shit and having to commute to Portsmouth and Wimbourne which are an hour half and 40 odd minutes from my house and only being on £6k a year it soon disappeared.

It might be different for the motor trade but thats what it costs to put me through college & train me to be an offshore Technician.

The pay will deffo go up every year as you get more experienced & valuable to the company. Not sure how much though. Mine only takes a huge leap cos im away 2 weeks at a time really........normal apprenticeships dont jump up that much!!

hi mate i work for renault (im a partsman) i started on that wage... £440 a month, i only pay £80 a month (£200 is a bit steep IMO) i was able to run my car on that money (just) if you stick it out the wages get better.
my wages are -
1st year - £2.50 ph £440 pm
2nd year - £4.00 ph £620 pm
3rd year - £5.00 ph
4th year - £6.00 ph
qualified - not a clue.

hope all this helps you decide
Graeme
