on here all the time, and know alot of people have good things to say about these.

ive sold my 306 dturbo, and was after either an A3 or Golf TDi. Going to look at a GT TDi tomorrow, so just wanted to know what the best things to look out for with them, good points-bad points, and how much power they come standard and with a remap.

also, before anyone asks, i know i should be on a german-car forum, but alot easier to ask on here as theres been a bit talm of them.

cheers

they do a gti TDI 130 and a gti TDI 150 - i think they will add about 20-25 bhp remapped and shit loads of torque, and i mean shit loads. esp the GT TDI 150

things to check for...

top end rattle - especially on the 150 bhp - cam followers wear through and eat the cam

make sure its had a cambelt every 60000 miles and the proper servicing etc ie brake fluid changed every 2 years

the tdi lumps are pretty solid not much generally goes wrong

a remapped 150 tends to be not very drivable, a very aggressive powerband over a very short range of revs, a 150 in standard form is probably better

How can you tell what the power is on them? Other than the person selling it saying its a 130 for example. For all i know it could be a 110 or something. Or is it really obvious?

good thing is it has full service history by volkswagon all the way.

dont know if its a 150 or 130 until i get there. whats the main differnce? the 130 just has a red i?

am sure the garage guy will know. supposedly a minter. my uncles best mate owns a garage, so i asked him to look out for a golf or an a3 for me...so this is the first one thats come through with the spec i asked for.

soon find out tomorrow. my bloddy private plate hasnt come off my 306 yet...been two weeks. bloody dvla!!

easy way is to look at the product sticker in the boot (on the floor under the carpet) this will have the engine power in kW..

115bhp = approx 84 kW
130bhp = approx 95 kW
150bhp = approx 110 Kw

Visually:

150Bhp PD - has a metal inlet - the boost pipe on the left hand side of the engine (cambelt end) goes round the top, drops down along the front of the engine (as it runs an FMIC).. the other models the boost pipe drops down to the driverside headlight (SMIC)

130 PD - Red 'DI' on TDI - also iirc has a metal inlet - i may however be mistaken

115 PD - Red 'I' On TDI - Plastic inlet

you may also come across the rotary pump diesels (pre 2001 iirc) have a bigger engine cover and only come badged with a red 'I' or all silver - avoid these models if possible they arent that great..

Oh and avoid the SDI model like the plague - its quite frankly shit

this ones a 130. went to see it and was hoping it would be that...as i wouldnt touch a 115...would hardly be faster than my dturbo. and 150 would be a bit much..leave me something to go up to. so 130 is middle and fits the bill. was very torquey...seems very smooth and loved it.

if i get bored, a remap will be o the cards.
does this affect fuel consumption.. co after all, thats what we like about diesels?
