I want to polish an old rocker cover up, but I'm not sure how to do it.

It's quite tatty, so I'm not sure metal polish would do it to start with?

Would I be best going through the wet and dry paper grades gradually getting finer til it was ready for the polish?

Has anyone done it before by hand?

i did mine by hand, use wet and dry to get it flat, then down the grades to some peek metal polish

me too, i used a drill attachment (metal brush) to clean all the shit/oxidisation off. Then used wet and dry then polished it properly. took hours

thats what my brother did, he also has done his inlet manifold, that took 2 whole days to do, lol

i lent him my carbon bmc and he didnt want to scractch it so taped it up and then used the ducting to get it far away from the engine as possible so it got less hot air from it

ahhh how long did it take him to do inlet? i did my rocker covers but they were smooth to start with the inlet is quite rough

Ok, I've been told to use 600grit, 800grit, 1000grit, 1200 grit and 1500grit, in that order.

Can I find anything finer than 600grit anywhere?

Can I balls

I think I'm going to have to use the 600grit then some Peek, it that'll do it?

I might just break in to my old school and use the buffer in the DT block

Yeah, I got 600 grit from B&Q earlier, but couldn't get anything finer, I went to B&Q, Homecase and Halfords (they're the only places near me who sell it) and none had anything finer than 600

Well, I need 5 sheets of 800, 5 sheets of 1200, I think that should do it.

I've looked on ebay though, it seems I can only buy 50 sheets of it

1200 is finer than 600 bigger the number the finer it is

Rob, Halfords should stock right up to 1200 grit. Maybe you should just wait and try them again later in the week?
