just got my car back after over 2 weeks of not having it due to the head gasket going amongst other things.

this is what was done/needed:

head gasket set
cylinder head skim
cylinder head bolts
timing chain
tensioner
timing cover gasket
sump gasket
thermostat
water pump
anti freeze
engine oil 10/40 semi syn
oil filter

all came to £651.76 total including VAT.

the guy said i should run it in for a couple thousand miles?

asked on here a while ago and people said it wouldn't need running in.

finally, what is the running in procedure, e.g. what rpm not to go over/ speeds etc

thanks very much just happy to finally get it back on the road, feels so weird though, not like it was before

hope it is clutch feels totally different as i think he adjusted the brand new cable.

when i first started it up tonight it was over revving and didn't start first turn of the key but i think thats just an intermitten problem as it didn't happen second time.

on the plus side, exhaust note is very very beefy

3.5k wont really do any harm, just a precaution to let everything settle back in etc etc

qualified mechanic whos worked as one for years said it did though?

he stripped the whole top end of the engine so don't know if that's anything to do with it.

Yeh but nothing that would need run in..

Run in is only for things like pistons, rings, shells, etc etc..

exhaust note has changed as the engine used to sound very tappy but doesn't anymore and you could hear this through the exhaust.

i am taking it back as he only lives round the corner but need it done asap as costing me a fortune using public transport all the time

You only really need to run the engine in when the piston rings have been changed???

with just this lot done:

head gasket set
cylinder head skim
cylinder head bolts
timing chain
tensioner
timing cover gasket
sump gasket
thermostat
water pump
anti freeze
engine oil 10/40 semi syn
oil filter

I would just make sure theres no coolant leaks, let it get to temp as usual a few times, check for air lock in the ccolant system and then drive it as normal. Last PVS I did a similar spec build on my engine the day before we went (got it finished the morning of PVS) then spent 4 hours at 90mph alll the way down.

as poeople have said. its only when you change piston rings and some bearings that theres a paticular running in procedure.
