Tony Blair has announced he will stand down as prime minister on 27 June.
He made the announcement in a speech to party activists in his Sedgefield constituency, after earlier briefing the Cabinet on his plans.
Mr Blair received a standing ovation from party members in the Trimdon Labour club as he arrived to make his long-awaited announcement.
He will remain prime minister until the Labour Party elects a new leader - expected to be Gordon Brown.
"I've come back here to Sedgefield - to my constituency - where my political journey began and where it's fitting that it should end.
"Today I announce my decision to stand down from the leadership of the Labour Party. The party will now select a new leader.
"On the 27th of June I will tender my resignation from the office of Prime Minister to the Queen," said Mr Blair.
He said he had been prime minister for 10 years, which he said was long enough for himself and for the country.
He urged people to "really think back" to 1997, when Labour won its landslide election victory.
"Expectations were so high. Too high probably, for both of us," said Mr Blair but he insisted Britain was now a better place, with more jobs ,better employment, better health and education services and lower crime.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
This country has gone downhill ever since labour came into power.
Maggie might have made mistakes, but she put this country in the economical position it is today.
Ever since labour has been in power, the word and culture of "chav" has come in. We are now in a nanny Big brother state where they dictate what we can and cannot do, and under watch by cameras at all times.
NHS has goen downhill, schools have gone downhill, and council tax/petrol, well everything has gone up every year. And to make it even better, he gives all my taxpaying money to scroungers and dossers who can't be assed to work, and end up robbing theiving scum anyway. The working person suffers while the rich and the council dossers get everything they want.
The country votes no to war, but he'll go anyway..
Or we could just let a few million immergrants into the country (no issues with foreigners coming to the UK, but they've taken the piss with letting anyone in).
I cannot stand Blair or labour. Tonight I will celebrate with a beer.

Agreed. I saw the programme narrated by Jame Theakston, we need CCTV. And talking CCTV is immense.

British industry is down whilst imports from abroad are up, farming is on its arse thanks to labour selling us out to europe. I pay more road tax yet my roads are worse than before, i have to borrow huge amounts of money for housing at high interest rates.
I lost my job to one of 13,000 polish immigrants to arrive since last year in northants.
Im now treated as a criminal because i own firearms.
My council tax has gone up yet i only have rubbish collected once a fortnight
Thanks Labour

I watched that!
Without cameras, those cunts stamping on that guys head who was just waiting for the bus would've got away with it.
I feel safer with cameras and if Tony is responsible, I say "thanks tony!"

That is at your own local governments discretion. Ours is predominantly Conservative, and we have fortnightly collections.

Yeah, im a criminal. Must be a damn good one to work in a law firm
Your northen, life is different up there.
I think the average amount of times you can be caught on camera in London is 300 times per day... Just what I want to know when im eating my lunch outside. Some people sitting there stearing at me on a TV...
In the right areas, fine, but having them absolutly everywhere watching anything and everything you do is not.
Also, thats not even taking into consideration all the motorway cameras. They can't catch you, but they can still watch you and send out PC plod to intercept if your say having a "spirited" drive......

And that kinda culture has come because of labours ability to give all our money to the scum that does this kinda thing. Labour has funded the new wave of gun and knife crime. He's given them money to get what they want.
Its always been about, but please do tell, how many murders, knifings, killings etc were happening when you was a kid? Sure there were murders, but people didn't get stabbed for saying a bad word.
