Ive started to go to the pool twice a day now trying to get fit before summer, doing about 70 lengths in the morning and between 80 and 100 in the evenings. I started almost 3 weeks ago, although was only going once a day for the first two weeks, started going twice a day all of last week and this week. Ive noticed that my shoulders are getting a bit stiff and achy, not too bad at all, but I was just wondering am i supposed to stretch and stuff before, or is is not really necessary with swimming cos its a low impact exercise, and its just my body not being used to exercise?

It's like that because you're not easing yourself into it. You should start off with going to the pool once a day instead of twice, and probably doing less than 70 lengths at a time and working your way up as the days/weeks continue.

You should warm up the muscles and stretch first regardless of the exercise.
Couple of easy lengths, bit of stretching, then do your main lengths, then at the end do a few cool down lengths and a few more stretches.

Should always warm up before any exercise and warm down afterwards no matter how low impact the exercise is

That could be where Im going wrong then, I usually do the first 40 alternating between front crawl and breast stroke, then all the rest front crawl, doing the last 2 lengths as fast as I possibly can.

Oh and it's to do with the build up of acid in the muscles which causes pain the next day, standard grade P.E.

You should warm up but not stretch, you can pull a muscle stretching before warming up.

by all means do the last few of your main set as fast as possible if your trying to push yourself, but after that just do a few slow and easy ones to relax your muscles a little.

During training I never used to stretch before the warm up, unless I was really stiff, mainly because our warm ups were usually 1500-2000m so that gave a good chance to loosen up before the main training. Then used to finish with around 200m of swim down.
Racing was different as you got to warm up at the beginning of the session, but could be waiting round hours for your event, so a few events prior to mine I used to stretch. Generally never got to do a swim down unless it was at the bigger events like the Nationals etc

if you havent been swimming reguarly before its like a completely different movement of musclesso they are just getting used to it, make sure you are stretching if u want to loose weight/get fitter, do 1 session in the morning with a t-shirt on, we do it for staff training (im a lifeguard) but make sure you ask because some pools dont like you doing it.

May be a "stupid question" but how do you "warm up" and "warm down" I know what they mean but how do you ACTUALLY do it

if its swimming then do a few easy lengths, not pushing your muscles. This will loosen them up and then you can stretch.
If its in the gym or something then a fast walk/jog is the easiest way.
