I have a job interview on wednesday.
The job is advertised with a salary between x and y.
If they offer me the job, because i'm a graduate, I think they will try and offer me the minimum. Part of me thinks I should tell them I have been offered more else where and see what happens?
Discuss.

yeah but they way I look at it, they can obviously afford to pay up to the top amount, so if I just aim for a few thousand above the bottom amount, they would agree.

Ask for it in writing then IF they offer you the minimum. If you can't do it face to face?

You seem to know your stuff on the programming side of things from what I've read in Geek Day - all the best! What is it you do exactly?

Well if it's 30k to 42 I'd rather stay at 32K mate. If you go over 32k a year you'll get taxed 40%. Stay at 32k and it'll probably work out better for you!!

Say "I understand that there is a risk involved in hiring a new graduate, and the salary you would be willing to pay has to reflect this. I would suggest therefore that as part of my contract, I will start at an annual salary of £X, with a scheduled pay review at 6 months with a view to increase that to £Y."

the way i understand tax, which ive not done too much on in uni yet, being only in year 2 (accounting) is that you get taxed 40% on the money you earn above 32k a year, so if you earned 40k a year, youd pay 40% tax on 8k, and the normal amount on the below.
I could be wrong, as said, im not well up on it yet,
When i graduate i would be expecting 15-20k a year, if im lucky, and then progress from there really

Correct, plus if your tax code is 589L or something, you pay no tax on the initial £5890 you earn
