Bloody Nutter

Daily Mirror's report:

BROODING HATRED OF CAMPUS KILLER
THE VIRGINIA TECH MASSACRE: HE NEVER SPOKE ..WE CALLED HIM QUESTION MARK
Ryan Parry And Jon Clements In Virginia 18/04/2007
THE silent killer who massacred 32 students and teachers ranted in a suicide note to the US campus he terrorised: "You caused me to do this."

Cho Seung-Hui, 23, was a tinderbox of brooding hatred who had already threatened to bomb Virginia Tech University.

The South Korean-born English student spoke so rarely to fellow students he was known as "Question Mark" - and even took the name himself.

Yet underneath his expressionless mask the vengeful student, known to cops as an obsessive stalker, was raging at what he saw as the vice of university life.

On Monday, he wrote a pages-long list of grievances. In it, he railed against "rich kids," "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" before blaming the slaughter to come on his campus colleagues

He left his room at Harper Hall to gun down Emily Hilscher, 18, and her neighbour Ryan Clark, 22, in the nearby Ambler Johnston dormitory.

He then returned to his room where he left his note. Two hours later, armed with a newly bought Glock 9mm handgun and .22 calibre pistol and hundreds of rounds of ammo, he set out on his murderous mission of revenge.

His hate burned so fiercely he shot some victims at least three times. Survivors told how he stayed silent and calm throughout the killing spree.

Cho shot himself dead inside Norris Hall engineering faculty where he killed 30 others in four classrooms.

The words "Ismail Ax" were scrawled in red ink on the inside of one of his arms.

They may refer to the story of Ibrahim (Abraham) who was prepared to sacrifice his son Ismail with an axe.

Yesterday, classmates told how Cho stood out from the start as an anti-social oddball at the university in Blacksburg, Virginia. On the first day of a class last year, students introduced themselves.

When it was Cho's turn, he did not speak. A professor looked at a sheet on which everyone else had written their names.

Cho had only put down a question mark. Student Julie Poole said: "The professor asked, 'Is your name Question mark?'

"After that, we knew him as the Question Mark Kid." Eventually, Cho used it as his name on his facebook entry.

Classmate Virginia told how a fellow student complained to police that he was stalking her. She said: "He called himself Question Mark and so did we. It was true because nobody knew who he was.

"He sent me messages and I marked him up as friendly. Then a girl told me he'd been stalking her. She got a police report against him because he was turning up at her door."

Room-mate Joe Aust, 19, said: "He was kind of weird and always really, really quiet.

"He didn't talk to anybody. I tried to make conversation but he'd give one-word answers. A lot of times he was staring at nothing."

Creative writing teacher Lucinda Roy said Cho was deeply "troubled" and had recommended him for counselling. A colleague said: "There was concern about him. Sometimes, in creative writing, people reveal things. Is it creative or are they describing things?"

Cho wrote a play about a boy of 13 who accuses his stepdad of being a paedophile and killer, according to a US website.

The play describes the child's mother brandishing a chainsaw at the stepfather and ends with the man killing the boy.

Police confirmed Cho as the killer after matching his fingerprints with prints on the guns. Initially, they were unable to identify him because his face was unrecognisable after he blasted himself in the head.

A chain similar to that used to lock the main doors at Norris Hall, trapping students and staff, was found in his room.

Also found was evidence that Cho was behind a recent hoax to bomb Norris Hall.

He bought his Glock handgun on March 13 and his pistol in the last week.

Gun shop owner John Markell said Cho paid £285 for his Glock. He said: "It's bad enough to know what he did. To find he bought it here makes it so much worse."

The killer's family arrived in the US in 1992. They live in Centreville, Virginia, and run a dry-cleaning business. The parents are now thought to be in the care of the South Korean embassy.

As a teenager, Cho attended the same school in Chantilly, Virginia, as Michael Kennedy, 18, who killed two police officers in a shooting rampage last year.

At first it was thought he went on the rampage because he rowed with first victim Emily, believed to be his girlfriend.

But Emily's mate David Miller said: "I don't think she knew him." Instead, the animal science student was dating Carl Thornhill. David said: "She was one of the nicest people ever and very much in love."

Emily's British cousin Jodi Heywood, of Northwood, Middlesex, said yesterday: "We're too upset to speak about this."
