. . .bit of a problem with regard to the modding lark.

Many of you will know that I want to lower the car about -40mm and get a nice back box on it. I would be able to do this eventually after saving up, and want to get it all done properly i.e. professionally fitted AND insurance informed.

Started the ball rolling today by phoning my broker, who I organise my insurance with, who is Zurich (who I was amazed with the service when I had my crash).

Anyway, they won't insure me if I lower my car and the woman is getting back to me regarding the back box, as I fancy a Piper one, and have been told by ESP Design that I won't see power gains.

I'm rather miffed to say the least, as they didn't add anything for the alloys, and didn't care about my Depos or debadge grill when I crashed.

Can't really afford to chop and change insurance companies AND the broker doesn't seem to have anyone else that will insure me when lowered.

Hopefully they'll insure the back box so I can make some change.

I emailed Zurich asking yesterday about a discount for Cat 1 Toad alarm - they said no. Seeing if the insurance broker can get me a discount though.

I find it hard to believe they won't give me a discount with alarm, even though Corsa security is quite possibly the worst.

So, Zurich, top company for service when you crash (repaired within 3 weeks, courtesy car, great service etc) pretty bad for modding.

Sucks to be me at the moment.

On the upside though, done a quote with Bell this morning, crash declared, mods declared, 10 month Bonus Accelerator scheme, £1100 (currenlty paying £1000). Think I might be changing come renweal.

Essay Sorry.

Alot of insurers ask for a CAT1 alarm as standard, I had to get one fitted and mail them the cert to make my insurance completely legal.

The insurance company when they look under the car upon inspection of a crash, and see sparkly, red, shorter springs. And the visual of the car plus I don't want the risk of having completely VOID insurance as it is technically 'performance' enhancing.

I've never had any problems with mods! Aslong as it's not big engine mods / conversions they aren't bothered. I've been with flux, hic and admiral.

Try adrian flux - they quoted me 1700 for a 19yo, 3 points, all mods including lowered and skirts etc and ive only had my licence 4 months. I think my insurance cud be dearer cos i live in Northern Ireland. They were cheaper than any other quote i got even though they were the only company i told about mods and points

i neva put my car being lowered on insurance as no one wud take it so neva bothered. im with elephant.co.uk and all my other mods are on it and its the cheapest iv found. its cheaper with the mods than havin a standard car with anuther insurer lol. there was an option "decerative exterior" wich il blague in saying that i put it under that as it makes the outside look beter lol. plus that covers all ur bits on the outside ie grill lights etc.

deano, dont get the car lowered and not declare it, its not worth paying for the insurance if your gonna void it by having undeclared mods

I agree, I'd prefer the peace of mind knowing my car was actually insured properly. Go with someone like brentacre, all i do is phone up and declare my mods and the policy says the same as its a modified car policy. I could risk it becuase all the bits i've put on are actual peugeot bits (bar the exhaust) , but mine looks nothing like what it rolled out the factory like.

Me too. My crash repair cost £1800 before the excess (so insurance company paid out about £1400), and god knows what it cost to the other 2 cars. I would not be able to afford all that if I crashed my car and they didn't pay out.

Not worth the risk imo. And yes, it will mean I have more money and can set about getting the car serviced etc

Who knows what my renewal will be come September.

Still haven't heard about the exhaust yet.

Abdus - that wouldn't work, as I've already told them I've thought about adding it etc.

Ive slapped alloys on mine (standard corsa ones) and not told my insurer. IF it came to it... ill sayi bought them on the car, because it is a high spec model I though it came with them standard!

both the mods you mention are performance based.
yes lowering (springs and shocks) won't have any major effect (ie it wont perform like a VXR), and an exhaust although <15% max increase WILL have a power performance increase.

at 19 you're still young, and that is bad for any insurance quote/
depos and badgeless grill are cosmetic changes and alloys rarely have an effect on an insurance quote unless they are super sized (ie oversize for the car 17+ for Corsa for eg) or expensive.

i am with ecarinsurance. like you with a 12V pot in the front.
when i took the policy out 11months ago i had no NCB and had a crash like yourself to add
with an excess of £400 and safe post code area, no additional drivers, my quote was for £500
i then had the Irmy kit fitted and declared at no extra cost.
when i declared the K&N and exhaust i had to top up at the cost of £70
ecar wanted extra cover for my "performance mods" - but lets remember, its still a 12V, but it does make a nice - no LOVELY noise but they see performance modification and you pay.

at 21 (almost 22) i'm chuffed with my quote, having the crash Sept 05 (photos) i knew i would find it hard to get a decent quote. look around and you'll find places that will except mods. i took the policy out in May knowing by July i would have the kit fitted and Sept the "performace" mods and took this into account when finding an insurance quote.

sorry a bit of an essay! but i know wot your going through!

but fonz, irmscher stuff is factory?

don't know if all of it is though. that could be why there was no increase.

it is facotry but that wasn't an option when declaring it.
ecar maintain cheap quote by staying purely internet based, just like Swift (cluck cluck etc) and so was just a drop down list to find the part of the body kit that applied. (front air dam, rear bumper and spoiler) although i may have clicked the "car body kit" option which came in three further choices (<£500, £500-£1000, £1000+)

either way the fact i have Irmy kit or not made no effect to my quote. when i was searching for quote in may i asked for a price for a kitted car with a manufacture approved kit, all i remember said it made no difference. they look at the numberplate and "know" what is fitted as standard. the spoiler is on some Corsas as standard but if someone was on the ball would know that the Corsa Sting 12V did not have this fitted as standard.

and to show this even further when i declared the exhaust i had no option to say it was "factory" (ie Irmy) it was still an exhaust and paid the extra!
