Do engines using hydraulic tappets need the valve clearances set up

Ive just picked up my rebuilt head & the guy that done it was bleathering on about making sure I attach the camshaft & do the clearances before sticking the head back on. I assumed because there hydraulic they dont need done

If they need done....what do I do??

no, never had to splay with valve clearance with hyd lifters or followers.

its usually only on engines with solid lifters that you need to play with shims etc. just make sure you set the cams at TDC and get the crank at 180 degrees from tdc when you bolt the head down.

Cool thought not

Its worth sticking the tappets in a vice for a couple minutes to get the oil out of them before refitting though yah???

TDC being piston 1 all the way down & inlet valve open

I think its all marked anyway........should just be a case of setting everything to the correct position & sticking the belt back on??

just get the head so that all the valves look closed and the pistons 1/2 way down the bores. then time it up.

so many people just chuck the head on with piston 1 at TDC and then bolt it on. then end up crushing/bending a valve.

Ok, im going to take my time making sure I do it right, turn it over by hand before firing it up....dont want to do it wrong & fuck it up.
