I'm looking for a Corsa for my wife and have £1000 to spend. For this money there seem to be plenty to choose from with between 60k and 100k miles.

However, I dont know if we should go for the 1.2 16v, 1.4 8v or 1.4 16v engine.

What are these like for reliability/economy? I assume the 1.2 16v is the most economic of the three for is performance noticably worse than the 1.4 engines?

The car will be driven mostly around town but will also do a few long motorway trips (80 miles on the M40) each year.

The motorway driving is the reason we have already discounted the 1.2 8v engine.

the 1.2 16v engines are economical good little engines, afm and tps are prone to failing but other than that they are fine.

1.2 16v engine will be better than 1.4 8v engine i would presume. one being that 1.2 16v is 65bhp and 1.4 8v i thought was 45bhp?

i say get the 1.4 16v if you can afford it.

1.4 8v had 60 or 82bhp, 1.4 16v was 88.

I'd go for a 1.4 16v.

I'd look for the 1.4 16v engine. Seems happy enough on the motorway.

Heres another consideration as I've found a nice 1.7 Diesel on EBay that is just round thr corner from us.

Its done 108k miles though !! Are there engines OK for that kind of mileage?

That would be deathly slow, and not that great on the motorway.

I assume the difference in power of the 8v engine is indicated by "1.4si" on the rear as opposed to "1.4i" ?

I've seen Si on the rear of an L reg GLS.

Whats an AFM and TPS ?

I assume the AFM is a MAF ? (air flow meter)

I did 198 miles to Cardiff every 2 weeks in my 1.2 8valve, Didnt do too bad, just need the radio turned up to drown out the buzz of the engine,

To answer your question though, Id take the 1.4 16v, Get a Sport so you have the toys, I would say that though cause im young i suppose

if i was you i would stay away from the 1.4 spi engine as it is only 60 bhp and has very few tunning abilities also it will use more fuel than a 16v from experience

my freind had a 1.2 16v and if we both went to southend he would always come home with more fuel and he had a better topend, mine had more torgue

Hi, slightly off topic, but was just wondering if anyone knows the MAX rpm of the Corsa 1.2 8V? Is it 6500rpm like most other petrol corsa's?
Thanks for any help!

some funny replies....

8v MPi engine is great. tbh, i liked the power delivery better than the 1.4 16v. Power was all low in the rev range, always there, pulled nice for a 1.4 8v..

1.4 16v is the quicker engine bottom end, but it needs to be revved to get going. For town use, the 8v is much better. But if your looking at a 16v engine, just go for the 1.6 16v, so much more torque and pulls so much better than the 1.4 16v.

1.2 16v, gutless whiney wheeiner engine. Needs to be revved the hell out of to get going, and gutless when it comes to overtaking, pulling out of junctions etc... BUT, it sits at 90mph on the motorway all day, and is very economical...

I'd say the MPi 8v for your wife. Its got the power where she'll use it, and should it have a problem, you can buy another whole engine for like £50

I base my opinion on having all 3

What do people think of this car ?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320096829033

Its done 118,000 miles which is a lot, I know - but diesel engines can manage that cant they?

Tempted to go for a test drive to see if it really is as slow as some have said it will be.

My 1.2 16v is great on petrol, ive had 450 out of a tank!!!

IMO its the best engine, got resonable performance - but does lack some low down power. Its nice and stable up to 90 on the motorway, sips "expensive petrolium"
