It is against the law to take one's life, or the attempt to do so. So if you fail to commit suicide and get arrested, technically you could get prosecuted for attempting murder.
If you get arrested, don't worry about going to jail (at least, not in most civilized countries), because you will be declared insane, and therefor probably be sent to a mental institution.
How true is this????

In theory, you should be arrested, as it is illegal, but in practise, they'll not bother, you'll be taken to a psychiatrist or something.

If you make an attempt at suicide you will be sectioned under the mental health act.

You are 'scored' when in hospial, if you answer questions and score above a certain amount you are sectioned, if you get below you are released
Many people who make regular suicide bids know this system, and know what they need to say in order to be released

It is not illegal to take or attempt to take your own life. However as stated above, if it is a real attempt you will be held under the mental heath act for your own saftey.
In Scotland the Police would arrest you for a breach of the peace to allow a doctor to look at you as it takes ages to section someone under the mental health act. So for your own saftey you would be arrested

The bloke next door slit his wrists a few weeks ago & shut himself in his house not letting anyone in, police had to break the door down & he was carried away in an ambulance...........he was released from hospital the next day & allowed to carry on as normal
