Hey all

Right this won't apply to many people I doubt but worth a shot. I am in real need for some extra cash right now and over the next few months so i've decided to try and get some more freelance design work again.

What i'm wondering is if theres anyone on these forums who is in the same line of work/similar experiences who can tell me how they went about finding work, is there websites you can go to and put ads up etc all that information. I know quite alot of it is through word of mouth but its just getting started is the main bit.

I have over 400 business cards of mine sitting at home doing nothing so I will be chucking those out everywhere and also have my website www.lakerdesigns.co.uk so I guess i'll have to update that and spread that about a bit.

Do you think I should write/email local companies to me and say I can redo there branding/websites etc and see if that gets some interest? I've tried before but not had much luck.

Thanks for any help!

*edit* forgot to say it would be part time type freelancing as I work 9-5 in a design studio for a publishers during the day. Shame I can't steal clients for myself but the jobs are way to big for freelancing

IIRC there are a few sites around that you can 'bid' for projects that others have put up.

Youd have to do some searching to find them though as no idea what they are!

Not sarcasm

I'm no good at graphic design like that, more technically minded.

Hehe thats good then! thanks

I wish i could use more 3D work in my stuff but I never learnt the likes of 3DS Max which was around when i was learning. Can do some really nice work with 3D images. I don't have to make them here at work luckily, we just have a huge folio of pre-made ones of Photoshop files of 500odd mb, 100's of layers etc too so can usually make your own using there layers etc.

Got a phonecall from a friend today, hes being sued by Gettyimages for £2000 for the use of an image. Funny thing is he only got it in an email joke thing 6 years ago and used it on his personal site. Now hes been lumbered with that bill. Ouch

Wow that www.elance.com is such a great idea and good website. Shame its pretty much all american. Wonder if theres a english equivalent. I'm definately looking into that elance though, seeing if people outside of US can do it. Membership prices aren't to bad either

Cheers nismo

Anyone, anywhere can do it, some people specify that they want ppl in the US only, but most arnt bothered. All communication is done thru email etc anyway so it dnt really matter.

Id imagine people outside the US can. The one I used to get some ecommerce work done had them for all over the world...only problem is you'll have to compete with prices from cheaper countries!

Ah great this sounds promising. I'm guessing it will be tough at first as I won't have any 'reputation' etc through it kind of like ebay. So will probablly have to take some cheap and easy projects to get it up. Anything is fine at the moment though, as long as I make more than i'm paying for membership obviously!

Yeh competing with cheaper countries would be pretty tough, looks worth it though, going to look into this site.

I could of had the opportunity of working for Puma in Boston but it fell through I would of been alright if it went through!

There are plenty of websites like this, i've done loads of php and sysadmin work in the past via these sites but its usually extremely underpaid as your competing with people from india, poland etc....

You would be better off advertising your services locally.
