You know why it went? did you get it hot?

Iv always said head gaskets shouldnt just go, Id see it as an opertunity to have the head gone over before it all goes back together, might be worth doing the belt and waterpump at the same time to prevent future disaster.

Right its not been overheating at all. Its been drinking water and oil like no end been checking and topping it up every sunday. Then started running shit on sat night drove it home then wouldn't drive sounded like it was firing on two. Mate came round and in the header tank was traces of oil.

lad who i bought the engine off said it had been rebuilt 1000 mile before i got the engine it shouldn't of gone yet should it.?

depends on the quality of the parts used for the rebuild and the workmanship really. maybe the head wasnt skimmed? maybe they used a cheap gasket? maybe they didnt torque the bolts up correctly?

its an easy job on the xe wont cost much or take long.

if you can do it yourself it wont cost much at all, but you need to know why the head has gone!!!

Get the head Pressure checked and resurfaced, about £50-£80, if its all ok then get a new head gasket and when i did mine went for some Head studs, if you speak to steveboyslim of MIGWEB and Vauxsport he will sort you out with everything you need for just over £100!

its not that hard to do

its not that bad at all mate, to save your self money you can get it all to bits and then just get someone with abit of experince to do the things like cambelt and torqueing up the head? but they are not really that hard!

i was worried about it too but after doing it, i found it not to be that bad!!! Labour is the most expensive bit of modifying so if you start learning yourself more of your money can be spent on bits!!!

When looking at the engine, on the right is a pipe that goes to the oil pick up i think, nip it off at the head/camcover end and see how much mayo is present.

Likely cases for mayo are:

The two front headbolts which always go have stripped out of the block causing water to get into one of the pots. This requires you to remove the head, clean it all off, replace the head gasket and helicoil the fucked holes on the block.

Other is pourus head, which means cracks in the oilways or whereever it is, to resolve this you need to whip the head off and have it treated or 'sealed'

i had the first one, stripped head bolt, If thats the case it's likely to be the Dowl ones and get them both done just becuase they are the ones that always go and if you only get one done you could be doing the hole thing again shortly after when the other one has gone!!!

also if you get headstuds you wont be able to strip the thread in the block refitting the head!!! a worthwhile mod and pretty simple to do!!!
