all of the ones near the battery are vacuum pipes, but there's no point, you don't need one, it doesn't really do anything useful.

You mean 'it tells you when your engine is not running'?
I had one in my Mini, all it does is the opposite of a boost gauge, and is therefore pointless

But if any of those faults are happening, the engine will be quite obviously not running right, negating the need for a gauge to tell you.

In theory they are a good idea...
but in practice im sure your right robin, especially on a 1.2 8v
