it depends on how badly you want the money ask for double time or something. they're being cheeky by trying to take advantage of you, be cheeky by asking for more money.

They've already broken the law, as you have to leave 11 hours between shifts or somethng.

The sunday shift that i worked last nite was 'optional' however if no one else will do it, i have to, which is most weeks, else the department would be empty

Depends how much you want to help the boss out and what time off or additional money they will give you in return. If you make your stance clear that you only do better rate at short notice then you might find you are not put in this position.

If you want to be a company man & go anywhere then do it, if your not arsed & its just a job then dont do it!! Ive been put in similar positions & bent over backwards to help employers out, from my experience its never done me any favours so ive decided that from now on that stops!!!

Thanks Shelly, i do want to go far but theres a fine line between helping your boss out and him taking the piss. It is all about how much you love the business(or pretend to) but for example, last year i booked the new year off work in febuary to go away with the gf, they accepted and i paid for the holiday. Then i november was told that i could not go due to the needs of the business and so didnt go as i would almost certinately have lost my job. Never got any thanks, kiss my ass, nothing but supose thats just the way it is.

They cant make you work nor sack you for taking holidays they have agreed.........you should have went!! I would have booted his balls from one end of the shop to the other if he even suggested I cancel a holiday thats been agreed for 8 months!!
Dont be a push over, go above him (store or district manager) & question his conduct, wave the working times regulations in their faces & ask for a copy of the companies policy on holidays & working hours!!
Your an easy target to get the boss out a hole if you dont stick up for yourself!!!

It might not have been a bad idea to mention to him that you'd maybe do a couple of hours not a full shift as you know that "by law you have to have 11 hours break between shifts". That way he knows that you know it's not really on to ask...
