Im going to Le Mans this year, woo! Anyone else going? Peugeot have released pic of their car...

Its a diesel. I expect there will be a few in the line up this year, but they are boring, no flames thrown out the exhaust, no growling engine sound, they are just plain boring really. They dont call us petrol heads for nothing! Whats your thoughts?

Diesels suck. They don't rev, they black smoke, they smell, they sound sheeite and they have sheeeite narrow power/torque bands.
I know a bloke that raced a Lola diesel at LeMans and he wasn't impressed.

looks very nice, but yes diesel is loud, although in last few years the technology has improved very much and diesels are now quieter and faster

They rely heavily on boost, which comes in from 2000rpm and tails off at 4500rpm. Wouldn't call 2500rpm a wide torque band
Before anyone jumps on the above statement, i realise that there may be cases where a diesel lasts longer than 4500 etc etc. but lets be honest they're not exactly high revving

Are you suggesting that diesels don't smell? That they don't black smoke? That they don't sound like tractors? And that they don't have sheeite peaky boost reliant torque / power curves. Come on

Nice wheels Looks very Toyotaish too, reminds me of GT-1 LeMans car they did.

Diesels may not have a wide power band but its very usuable.

You sir are an idiot. I've never known a diesel car to smell of anything but exhaust fumes, and your precious petrol car also does that. Only the older diesels sound like tractors, the newer ones are significantly quieter. The black smoke is just when excess diesel is burned off; there's something not right with a diesel car that constantly pumps out black smoke. A narrower torque/power band, yes, true but diesels are predominantly there for economy and not performance; the fact that newer diesels acheive both is just a bonus.
And knock diesel cars all you like- those diesel Le Mans cars won't be finishing at the back.

Butttttt how annoying is it changing gear every 2 seconds fair enough they pull very well but you just want it to last longer, it's like a new years eve anticlimax everytime you drive one imo

Idiot?

Diesels are noisy, even brand spanking new ones clatter and rattle. Diesels DO smell bad, how you can argue that I don't know . The reason they won LeMans is because the rules were massively bent in their favour, a fact that surely even you cannot argue

edited to add: This is a discussion about diesel's place in motorsport not the M25. When was the last time you heard a diesel go past and wound down your window to get a better listen, or stood in the middle of the forest at night and watched a diesel spitting flames out the exhaust as it popped and banged, or stood at the top of a hillclimb and played guess the car by the sound of the induction noise. Diesels are not for motorsport.

right now i drive a diesel and im all for diesel advancing as long as it doesnt wipe out petrol cars.

i remember when my mate who works for bmw took me out in the 200bhp 330cd, i couldnt believe it was a diesel apart from the huge torque it produced. it was very fast(for a diesel) actually sounded nice and would return 35mpg when driven hard.

he tells me the new 535d is an absolute monster( the twin turbo version) and i was reading on pistonheads that a remapped 535d is about the same as the new m5

Diesels have come a very long way since the first DERVs came out. Yet people don't seem to take note of this. They don't rattle, they just sound different to petrol engines - they don't sound as nice as a petrol engine though. Mine only really smells on start up when you are bellowed with a cloud of smoke

I would like diesels if they could get rid of the black smoke.
