Well i went to Poland with college 2 years tomorrow so i thought i'd post up some pictures i took while i was there. i know there are people on here that are interested in history so i hope this wasn't a complete waste of time Alot of it is about Auschwitz by the way

Here we have the famous sign at the entrance to Auschwitz I, the sign loosely reads "Work Brings Freedom"

Here we have an urn filled with the ashs left in the incinerator when the camp was liberated to commorate the people that died there

Here is a picture looking across one of the lanes between the buildings

The following are pictures of confiscated items from the prisoners, this is hair the Nazis confiscated to be sent to make fabric

Glasses

Ceremonial Robes

Artificial Limbs

Pots and Pans

Suitcases

Here is a pile of containers that were used to carry Zyklon B in.

This is a diagram of the gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau

Outside the infamous "Block 10," the block used to torture political prisoners, they would be found guilty in a small courtroom inside then taken outside and shot against this wall

The Courtroom inside Block 10

In the cellar of Block 10, as special punishment, 4 people would be forced into a room of this size 1x1 metre and would stay there for days at a time

An engraving in one of the cells in the cellar of Block 10, it shows Jesus

Another picture looking across the camp

A picture of barbed wire between areas of the camp

A picture of the gallows where the Commandant of the camp was hung after its liberation. The house where he lived with his wife and children was around 100 yards to the right of these gallows, the gas chamber was about 50 yards to the left.

The Gas Chamber at Auschwitz I

Inside the gas chamber

The incinerator used to burn the bodies of people killed in the Gas chamber next door

Here is the infamous watchtower at Auschwitz Birkenau, the train bringing in prisoners used to travel under the watchtower

The view from the Watchtower

More views of Birkenau

This photo illustrates the area of Birkenau Spielberg was allowed to use in the filming of Schindler's List

This illustrates the toilet facilities used by hundreds of people, they were open for 10 minutes per day

A smaller watchtower along the railway line inside the camp

The view looking towards the Main watchtower from around half way across the camp

The Watchtower from around half way across the camp, zoomed in

One of the openings from the railway line into the main areas of the camp

The view of the end of the camp looking towards the memorial from around half way across the camp

The Memorial at the end of the camp on the far side from the main watchtower

The English version of the memorial at the end of the railway line. The same message was in each language of the people that died there. It reads "Forever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity where the Nazis murdered about one and a half million men, women and children, mainly Jews from various countries of Europe. Auschwitz-Birkenau 1940-1945"

The remains of the gas chamber at the far end of the railway line near the memorial at Birkenau

Next we have random photos from around Krakow, the city in which we stayed
The square used in the filming of Schindler's List, the scene where the Nazis are throwing the Jews from their homes

An area of the Jewish Ghetto as it stands today

Schindler's factory

The Church in the centre of Krakow

Snowy paths

A posh café that was still really cheap

The resting place of past leaders, the equivalent to our St Paul's Cathedral

Then i have afew photos of Warsaw, the Captial of Poland, where we stayed for a day
The changing of the guard

The tomb of the unknown soldier, this is all that was left of the Royal Palace after the Nazis destroyed the entire Western part of the city in their scorched earth policy

The new Royal Palace

The central Post Office, the statues commerate the Jews that held an uprising in the Ghetto against the Nazis

My mate and a giant beer walking around Warsaw

The Poles really know how to modify

I have many more photos, but this is all i can bare uploading for now, i hope somebody learns/enjoys this thread (Ojc, if you're still here)

ps sorry Ian about so many photographs

as i said before, get over there. its well worth the visit. everything is cheap over there too

it was a strange trip really, because on the one hand we were visiting all these depressing morbid places then at night going out on the booze having a good time, sorting of letting it go at night, not trying to dwell on it too much, because after all, it is depressing.

I look at Auchwitz and to this day cannot believe the things that went on by human beings to other human beings.....only SIXTY years ago. It always sounds like something out of the roman times. Terrible.

Wow, the snow makes the place look even more chilling.

It's horrible to think what the prisoners went through and the scale of the place is amazing.
