Mav - In Wales i was liable for council tax the date i moved in, not from ownership

They sent someone round to check i wasnt living there, then i called up the day i moved in and started paying that month.

Owned it Feb 06, moved in June 06

PS - Call your local council

Sure here it is the date you own it from, as even if it lies empty still liable to pay...I'm maybe wrong though..

I'm re-doing my lounge atm, moved tele, p.c., monitor, speakers, bookcase(tele now on it) all about. Its starting to come together, just need to tidy up again now and get those surround speakers up which havent been used in 6 years!

I noticed!

Mines not quite as major an overhaul as yours Mav, I painted the walls, got new sofas, just hung some curtains at the back(what a FOOK of a job that is) and am now moving stuff all about to get it looking 'right'. Which is probably the hardest part tbh.

You get some form of discount in scotland if you havnt moved in but you need to prove you havnt moved in or are getting work carried out prior to moving in. You can get a form from the council 1 stop shop.

Taken from direct.gov website :

When a property is empty
If a property is empty the person normally responsible for paying may qualify for exemption or a discount. You can check the detail about discounts and exemptions in sections 10 to 13 of the leaflet 'Council Tax - a guide to your bill' (you'll find this under the 'More useful links' section at the end of the article).

The links below will let you enter details of where you live and then take you to your local authority website where you can find out more or apply online.

About 3/4 the way down the page - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/CouncilTax/DG_10037383
