I've been in a management position for about 6 months now and yesterday I had to have my first "talk" to the two members of staff I work with. It was to do with their arrival times to work.
For the past 2 months or so they have been taking the piss by getting to work late (usually 10, 15 or 20 minutes late every day). Because they take their full dinner hour and leave dot on time I thought something should be said to them.
They didn’t deny anything and seemed to accept it, however today they seem really quiet as if they are pissed off. I said it in a tactful way and not with an angry tone.
Is anyone else in a management position and has had this sort of problem?

They are pissed off, they were busted yesterday and were probably so used to doing what they wanted and 'rolling in' in the morning then they will be annoyed, dont worry about it

you can either be the kind of manager who lets people gets away with things but stays friends.
or
you can be the kind who does what he has to do being in a management position and not care about being friends.
Just let them get on with it, if they want to sulk let them!

I think i'm the second one to be honest.
The strange thing is tho, after i had a word with them, i had one of the best days work out of them i've ever had

Glad I don't have to do stuff like this anymore. When in that position it feels as if everyone hates you  One day I was everyone's friend, then the day I got promoted that was it, instant hatred

I don’t often use it during the day anymore...but CS if full of super intelligent people and I wanted their opinions on this

I guess I am of manager, though im also partner, tea boy, mail sorter, sales assistant......... we have a couple of blokes work for us.
Whats the problem? They arent doing what they are supposed to do. You spotted the problem and dealt with it. IMO you did what I would do.

I have to do this a lot, they'll sulk for a bit, but in the long term they will have more respect for you and know not to take the piss.

The problem was that they just take the piss with the times they get to work and then expect to take their full lunch and leave on time.
When I took up the job I was advised not to think that they would adapt to my way of working (I work hard) straight away because everyone has their own way of doing things.
Fine...but being on time for work is a must for anyone I thought.
The way I told it to them is this. "Us as ICT Support people must be here promptly at the start of the day as most of the customers need us first thing"
I also stated that there have been at least 3 occasions in these past 2 weeks where someone has rang for a specific member of staff who should be here and I’ve had to say "I’m sorry but they aren’t on site yet" which made me feel stupid.
I don’t think I’ve been unfair to them

I have to tell temps this all the time!!! You try telling a 30yo HGV driver he needs to watch his time keeping when you are 19!!!! Suprisingly i get a lot of respect from temps, but you get a few old skool boys who are old enough to be my dad get fucking arsy when i tell them off!! But i can just not offer them work the next day so all is well!!!

I had the same problem. I was telling people twice my age what to do, felt a bit strange.

Not unfair at all and you shouldn't feel bad.
I was late everyday for my placement last year but i lived miles away and worked an extra 30 mins than the two students there now. They leave at 3.00pm whereas i used to leave at 3.30. But i was meant to start at 8.45am and most days got there just after 9 - 9.20am. Plus there was only one of me whereas now there is 3 (one part time, was 4 but i walked out ) them  That's another story but i don't wanna go into it!
But i look at it this way, i had no-one to impress as at the end of the day, they were never going to offer me a full time job. Also, no-one ever complained and i never actually started classes until 9.30.
I can't wait to get a full time job again and work my bollocks off to get somewhere.

Update.
Since about 10.00, today has been fine. The two members of staff have worked really well. It was a bit iffy at the start with one of them who takes half an hour to warm up in the morning but now he's fine.
Success, so it seems

Try being a manager of managers 
Ive had to cut pay, do disciplinarys, send people home and all sorts of stuff that really sucks!!
Including having "a chat" with someone about a humourous email he sent (which i actually found funny too)
I find management is much about give and take whilst maintaining an acceptable level of respect.
To be honest i socialise with most of the people i work with too and the relationships great.

the best one is when you have to have the talk about there personal hygiene.
Also the people I have to deal with are of the minimum wage caliber with no respect for the company so that makes things even more fun.
