My Gsi is burning oil, haven't done a compresion test so don't know where.
There is a noticeable lack of power. The car has done 128,000 so is quite high mileage. Am i best off buying a lower mileage engine or getting mine rebuilt? What are the costs of a recondition?
Cheers Mike

not much in it really. finding a C16XE engine with low miles might be difficult.
i cant help with prices, but if you didnt want a proper engine conversion, go enquire into garages and aks about a recon...fairly simple to do really.

There's guy on here with one from Vauxhall with 25,000 on.
Problem being after i've paid him i'still got to pick it up from Cumbria, get it to a garage in Kent & pay for it fitted.
Just thought it'd be more reliable than ploughing money into mine that's got the higher mileage.

Hows the body of the car? Hows the interior? You could do a re-build on the engnie and you would have a nice engine. But it will cost a lot to do it properly. If the car is mint then do it, otherwise run it to death or sell it as a whole or for parts...

Thats a good point.
There are a couple of rust spots but was planning a respray for summer.
Interiors mint, Corbeau Recliners stripped rear (Saving for the cage!)

Well, weigh it all up and decide. If the engine has lasted this long then it is probably quite sound. So long as it isn't burning oil too then the block ought to be in good nick. So you could replace things like the oil pump, big end bearings, piston rings e.t.c... for peace of mind. Or you could consider upgrading lots of parts for tuning.... If the block is slightly worn then a re-bore and oversized pistons could be a good thing to do aswell...
