Just seen this on the lunchtime news...........

New legislation to increase the penalty for using a hand-held phone whilst driving will come into force on 27 February 2007. The current fine of £30 will increase to £60 and three penalty points on your licence. Penalty points can mean higher insurance costs. If you get six points within two years of passing your test, your licence will be revoked and you will need to re-sit the test. If the case goes to court, you could risk a maximum fine of £1,000, which rises to £2,500 for the driver of a bus, coach, or heavy goods vehicle

more can be found here.....................

about time. smoking whilst driving should also now be banned IMO.

was nearly rammed off a roundabout yesterdat by some gimp in a people carrier that decided that lighting up his cigarrete was more important than stopping at the junction.

Dont really see the point in banning it tbh. Not like people will stop doing it. It will just escalate like speeding has. Im a firm beleiver in education and prevention rather than a punishment

I find smoking whilst driving does not put you off in the slightest way whatsoever, using mobiles can be dangerous sometimes though, can't say i'm not guilty of doing it though

I wonder how long it will take to ban fiddling with the stereo or heater controls

Nope, but lighting it does... Even when i smoked I would happily comment on how dangerous it was to spark up.

Good I say, the amount of tw4ts who cause accidents, and have nearly wiped me out on the bike because they were too busy texting or calling someone opposed to paying attention to the 1 tonne peice of metal they are driving....

No need to be on the phone whilst driving, if you have forgot to connect up bluetooth etc. Either pull over or if it's REALLY important they'll simply ring back again and again.

I never use my phone when driving i.e. holding it. I have a bluetooth headset which works just find and if I can't be arsed, my phone fits perfectly in between the top of the steering wheel and airbag, then just use loud speaker
