Basically I have NTL broadband. Originally, it went through the digital TV set top box. However, last year we changed to Sky TV though we kept the internet with NTL. So NTL came round and gave me a modem for the internet to run through.

For the time being I have just been plugging my Xbox into the modem and when I want to use the internet I unplug the Xbox connection and plug the internet cable back in (Think AndyW uses this method too). Now though, my Mum has started using the internet. Can I buy a router to allow me to play Xbox and her to surf the internet at the same time?

Will it be a case of putting the big thick cable that comes from outside into the router and then having both the cable to my Xbox and PC plugged in at the same time?

Thank you.

You can just get a new router, with multiple ethernet points and then you can plug more into it. So yes you could have a wire from xbox to router and from pc to router and both work. Alternatively you could also get a wireless router and get a wireless adapter/card for pc and the adapter for 360 so then its no wires all depends how you want to do it etc

the router you got now should be plugged into phone line already, so it would just be a case of swapping routers, unless NTL do it differently

NTL give you a little blue box (they call it a cable model IIRC) with a big white cable going into it from outside, and it has an output for a big plug (the type which the xbox uses, and my internet) and a output for a smaller plug, looks like the size of a standard telephone plug.

Sorry i have no idea wbout all this stuff, in case you couldnt tell.

This is worrying. Ive just signed up for cable with telewest although its the same company now. I need to have a seperate modem and not one that is joined to my set top box as Im going to be changing my set top box from the std one.

Oh right, i'm not 100% sure then. Never seen a NTL one before (my area doesn't get it)

Usually the router plugs into the phone line socket with a DSL filter. Not sure how NTL have done that then if they've come straight from outside into the box, that might be because how it was done with the cable.

So all in all i've been useless! If you can find a picture of said box i will prob be able to tell you more, i can't look as i'm at work and meant to be working

This is what I have.

From the phone plug in the wall, a big fat wire goes into the back of that, then an ethernet port on the back which I plug my xbox onto.

I need a router or whatever with 2 ethernet ports on so I can use Xbox LIve and Internet at the same time.

Yeh thats all you need to do then Jamie the NTL ones look like they come with just one port, the bastards probablly don't want more than one comp on em! Just need a new router with 2+ ethernet ports, has to be a cable modem/router too afaik, (by cable i mean not dsl) but might want to check that

Cheers Flash, What port on my modem will i need to use to plug it into the router? The Ethernet port im using at the moment?

If thats the case this seems the most straight forward way to do this.

----------------> Ethernet to Xbox
Modem---------> Ethernet to router

----------------> Ethernet to PC

depending on the age of the cable modem you may need a crossover network cable to connect the router and modem if it under 4-5 years old it "should" be ok and sort it self out
