If you don't transfer the old one off then it will be back in DVLA stock. You might be able to get it if you ask them soon enough.

You need to retain the one you take off, im sure you get asked at the time if you want to keep it. My mate lost one this way but wasnt too bothered as he didnt have a purpose for keeping it & it didnt really mean anything!!

they usually give the number that the car had previously . Well everytime i have done so it has. inless its something like 1A which then they will withdraw and auction it off.

My mate had P9 LAB on his M3, wanted his own plate K33 UAN on it & sent the faither to the dvla office, they told him the current one is a cherished plate do you want to keep it & he said no lol could maybe have been worth a couple hundred but then you need to pay £105 fee to keep it so maybe not worth while!!

I dunno, you could pay the retention fee then it take 18 months to sell!! making you out of pocket for those 18 months!!
Up to you, I wouldnt bother though. If someone had offered you £400 in the hand for it tomorrow then id say chase it but they hav'nt!!

I know there is a time period before it goes on to another car. I am fairly certain its a year? to be honest that plate is worthless. For all the hasle id leave it. plus you will have to put yours on retension then re transfer it after, also will have to pay for the retension of the other plate. So in the long run you simply wont benefit
