Reet now the scoob has gone i want something a bit bigger and quicker then the lupo.
I dont want anything mad, its going to be mostly a town run about and something i can have a bit of fun in on the occasional long run.
max budget is £4k anything more and it aint a runaround.
Looking at 2000/01 plate Clio 172`s and the same year 206 GTi`s, have seen mint 206`s with 40k miles for 4k and a few 172`s with around 60-70k for the same price.
I know the performance characteristics of each of them.
Just wondered what reliability is like on both, any big pros and cons of each car? anything to look out for on them etc?
No suggestions for other cars, VAG stuff for 4k is too old/high mileage ie golfs etc, dont want jap.
thanks.

My old clio 172 was one of the most fun cars I've ever driven. It was just so eager to dive into corners and the grip from a FWD hatch was just daft.
I only had it for 12 months and nothing too major went wrong other than a cv needing replacing. There was a few other typically French things that were easy to fix, heater fan used to get stuck and once the trip told me I had 30 miles left in the tank but lied and I ran out.
Can't really comment on the 206 but I'd recommend a 172 to anyone.

I myself for a 4K budget would look at either the Clio or 106 GTi.

I'd have the 172 over the 206, purely because I prefer it looks wise, and it has more power.
I've never driven either any distance.

In a straight line there wouldn't be that much between the XE and Clio, as soon as you come to a corner the little frog is gonna leave it for dead.
As for the engine mounts, pass, like I said I only had it 12 months. Try searching around one of the Clio forums, see if anything crops up.

Because he is'nt interested numnuts. If you have nothing to say about the post made then don't say anything.
I have heard they are common for breaking engine mounts, also cambelt is supposed to be a massive job so make sure its been done or does'nt need one. I had a blast in one just down the road, felt pretty quick to me, a bit twitchy though but its not really supposed to be too refined I suppose.

iv'e driven both infact the 206 was the 180 but like the CTR they have no torque and feel slow. The Clio was much more fun to drive and felt more planted

I've got a 206 Gti, lots of fun and was really nice inside when I had an interior.
If I had the money again I think I'd have gone for the clio. At the time the 206 was well cheaper than the 172 for me to get.
I've not regretted getting the 206 ever but the clios are good.

I know someone with a 206 GTi 180, really quick car, recaro replica seats, outstanding looks, I would probably go for one of these as they are rarer that the 172's.

The 180 is well out of budget fella, 4k max.
So far looks liek we have come up that the 172 is a better drivers car, faster, more handling polish etc.
need some other pros and cons, like i said i consider this car a runaround that i can have occasional fun in, not to worried about paper performance figures etc.
