Not a bad idea tbh.
I've seen schematics of an "exhaust supercharger" that looked like a good idea for economy. Rather than have the engine turn the compressor though, the exhust gasses turned a turbine that drove the engine.

do you need to tow a trailer full of water and fill up at every train station?
wonder if you get a whistle too!

So a turbo then Rob?

A turbo is just forced induction

Nothing about the crank there.
Good description of a turbo though.

Well, quite a reasonable description I thought

A turbo uses a turbine to drive a compressor, not to drive the engine
They don't have to be connected directly to the crank, but admittedly it would turn that along with the rest of the engine.

Chaps, I think you took my first comment a little too literally.
The denoted joviality.

Okay Rob.
I WAS trying to be patient and nice, and I still don't wish to resort to sarcasm or jibes, so I will attempt to clarify.
I own a car with a turbo.
I have removed/dismantled/replaced/fitted countless turbos over the years.
I am au fait with forced induction technology, so do not require any kind of lecture on any of the fundamentals of turbo or supercharging, or of any other area of motor vehicle technology for that matter.
I have worked as a vehicle tech for nearly 17 years and have a perfectly acceptable grasp of terminology and technical descriptions.
I was merely attempting to point out in a jovial fashion that your original description of the device was closer to that of a laymans terms explanation of how a turbocharger operates than anything else.
It would in fact have been quite a reasonable analogy of the device described.
I apologise unreservedly for not being detailed or succinct enough in my original comment.
I now know to be more concise in future, and am sorry for any confusion or offence I may have caused you and any other users.
