you call him an idiot but if you read anything about it the keys were in the ignition and had turned quite a few corners before there. They dont know why the steering lock came on.

There's a thread on scoobynet about it,

apparently the key was in the ignition but not turned far enough, as soon as he gets over a certain amount of lock the steering lock activated, bizarre as he had plenty of steering up then, didn't lock until he got near a full half turn on it.
