I am going to get a set of decks soon as I have been playing around with mixing software on my comp for a few years now.
Few questions:
- CD or Vinyl
- With CDs, do you play from albums? Or buy CD singles
- Will I be able to get a decent set up for around £500?
- Any other advice?
Cheers,
James

Look in to Vinyl emulation
Google Final Scratch, Serato Scratch live and PCDJ Scratch (i use this one)
To use this technology you have two conventional decks with time coded vinyl which controls an mp3 on the laptop/computer connected to your decks.
Amazing technology that lets you manipulate an mp3 as if it was a normal vinyl record. You can also put a normal vinyl record on the deck and play it through the software

Sounds interesting, but I was in a club in Tenerife where a DJ used a computer and it crashed

Yeah that is the danger of this technology. I've heard horror stories about when Sasha's Mac Book crashed when he was doing a live performamce with Ableton Live

Does look cool though, and I guess it would be cheaper in the long run because I would just use limewire TBH

Yeah that was one of the reasons i got it..and because it was the newest technology at the time. But if you do get really into Dj'ing you'll beign to apprecieate digital music quality
Most of the tracks downloaded fro P2P are a maximum of 192Kb usually...tracks bought from the two i mentioned above are 320 (the highest possible)

My tip is buy as much as you can afford. Usually with Dj'ing equipment you get what you pay for.
Top end Stanton Decks are amazing as are Technics 1200/1210 Mk2
eBay is your friend for some technics decks...they go for about £350 these days

PCDJ Scratch + ASIO Sound Card = £200 ish
Technics 1200/1210 = £400
Mixer = £120 ish
Oh and some headphones...Sennheiser HD 205 = £30 from PC World (Bargin)
Then a stack of Mp3'z to play with.
This is only my opinion of course because the system has worked so well for me.
CD Mixers are also very good...i think old skool dj'ing with just vinyl isnt the route to take because u'd be paying £7 per record

I would go down the CD route...
Get yourself 2 Pioneer CDJs and a decent mixer...master that then move onto the computer software mixing...

if you are going into vinyl decks, (which IMO you shouldn't do now a days unless you can afford to buy 3-4 vinyls a week), then get technics 1210's or a like THE BEST.
If you are getting into CDJs then IF you can afford it get Pionner CDJ's. Pioneer CDJ 800s are top quality. However, the price tag is hefty! i couldnt afford them so i bought Numark Axis 9's and i use them im clubs where i DJ and i must say, they are great.
Also, spend as much as you can on ur decks, and not much on your mixer. Your decks will last you longer. so if u get dead expensive decks and get a cheap mixer you can always replace the mixer at a later date

agreed go cd's. Don't listen to people who spout nonsense about "you arn't a real dj is you use cd's, they are just deluded! Surely it's more about the music you play that the format its recorded on!!
Thats my view anyhow and to behonest the techniques are very similiar. The pro's of the amount of tracks availlable for cd's is never going to be arguable.

his switches between mixing using 1 normal deck and then a pair he said the main reason for cd deck is due to the amount of tunes you can get way before vinyl . hes ranting on that most clubs now dont have either all done on comp using mp3 or pre recorded!

Agreed. Theres nothing you can do with vinyl that you cant do with CDs. And you can carry 100's more tunes about with you.
Was runnig DJ Show North with Disco Technology last year and dennon(i think) had thier top CD decks. Few lads were having a bit of a scratching contest and they sounded wicked. The scratching emulator(or whatever its called) in CD decks is that good you cant tell the difference.

TECHNICS 1210s
mk5 g if you can afford them. These are 1 of the best on the market. IMO you should start with basics and work up, this way it is your own skill and not that of a pc
