The MOT was done on the 29th December last year and I've booked it in for the test on the 2nd January. Can I still drive the car inbetween times?

I was given wrong information, was told you could drive it for 14 days whilst getting work done.

Drove after it failed not when it intially ran out

even if a car fails mot before the expiry date is up, the car shouldnt be on the road as there are defects. read the back of the mot failure or mayb on the mot cert as well, read the small print
