what are peoples preference out of the 2? 8valve or 16 valve? do either have any advantages over the other?

if theres already been a thread about these i'll be happy with just a link to that but also thought it wuld be good discussion

8v's take more of a battering from my experience

same size, but more power from 16v!

People say the bottom ends are stronger on 8v, but who cares, buy 16v, rebuild, then it'll last!

16'v are more hastle to fix and generally more expensive but the reward to more power usually.

as above, depends what u want fro a engine.. a 8v will take more of a haering but 16v will give you more power, but if it breaks its starts to cost £££

but by no means are 16v unreliable

my 8v sri takes one hell of a battering, revs easily to just past 6k, sounds like a beast and mine is quicker than standard 16v's usually. but with the gsi coming along, i am coming over to the dark side with the 16xe, gonna tune it and see what its like!

ported/polished head, induction kit and full stainless system. not sure what it runs, its only a 1.4 sri but for such a small engine, it goes really well.

yes iw as about to add a bit more torque at lower revs but i think most people would rather settle for the extra power and more torque at higher revs

i dont think those mods make ur car faster then a 1.6 16v TBH

not 1.6, it was a 1.4sport of my m8z and left it for dead. never said 1.6!

Is the original poster on about big, or small block engines?

we all seem to be talking about different things.

I dont think a big block 16v is anywhere near unrelaiable.

Same with any engine, look after it & it will be fine.

Both engines are good, but 16v's are better than 8.

Nowt wrong with my 1.6 8v I lost 7 bhp by not putting in a 16v...big deal

all of the common myths are coming out in this thread!

8v are good engines but limited by the breathing aspect of things above 5krpm

16v are better at higher revs but need to be revved higher to produce the higher figures which usually means less low down torque

the 8v engines are no stronger than a 16v engine. due to the higher revs the 16v bottom ends are more likely to suffer premature wear

generally out of the 2 the 16v is a better engine as it is smoother, more economical, far more modern and more tunable.
