Because you can get a lot more force, pull alot more water past and your kicks are more effective going front crawl.

judging by world record time, where the technique is spot on you cant critisize the technique then

Kicks wont be no more effective as its the same kick,

I believe that with front crawl you're able to use most of your upper body muscles for pulling through the water and its more of a natural Possition but he wont have it, he thinks its do do with your arm going out of the body's line...

the kick is different. the kick on your back does not displace as much as on the front.

with the arms, on the backstroke, they don't bend, so you can't get as much power behind the pull, as well as your hands being the wrong way round...

If your technique is correct the front and back stroke involves a pull and push motion! and the arm does bend as you bring your arm in towards your body in back stroke...

all this bullshit just becasue he asked me if id like to do a swimming teachers course

btw!i will be more than happy to accept any more hard evidance that its more to do with body position and ease of stroke rather than streamlining...

from wiki

Speed and ergonomics

Backstroke is the second slowest stroke after breaststroke. The maximum swimming speed is around 1.84 meter per second. Due to its position on the back, backstroke uses different muscles in the upper body than other styles.

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

You get more pull from the arms on front crawl whereas on backstroke the arms only pull down the sides of the body unlike frontcrawl where they travel under & down the length of the body.
As for the kick backstroke leg kick your feet only come to the surface of the water & don't kick quite as deep as the kick on front crawl
