The only thing on the Nova that lets it down is the engine bay, so over these winter months while its off the road I'm going to give it a shot of making it clean & shiny.

Along with the bay I will be doing underneath and doing the inner arches white.






This lot needs a good clean and a few bits of paint.


I'm gonna do small bits at a time no rush but want to keep a running thread as it progresses.

Any suggestions as to how I can make the engine bay smooth rather than textured prior to spraying? Obviously I can rub it down but is there a alternative?

Dremel will do it quicker than rubbing.

Should look good Ollie, but it doesn't really need to be any better IMO

Dremel with what attachement Robin?

Thanks for the comments, after seeing numerous threads on Passionford with people doing restoration it inspired me into action this week and along with good comments it really motivates you to do these things.

You should try and hide all the loom and pipes too if you can be arsed. Love the look of clean bays like that.

Trouble is I don't want to have to remove the engine loom or the car loom as its old and I don't want to break it, I'll think of something to clean it up, hide it somehow.

This could be good for smoothing on the end of a Dremel

Dremel 504 Flapwheel
Use for grinding and polishing flat or contoured surfaces.

Use on metal, wood, rubber or plastic.

That'd do to get paint off, but I can't see it being any good for smoothing things like the inlet.

I need to get some chrome wing bolts, the chrome bonnet latch & spring and a chrome bonnet stay as well.

I don't think you should do the chrome wing bolts, agree with the rest of them bits though.

not sure if you have done it or not,
but i did this on my nova and it looks a bit better

hid the wiring that goes across the slam panel, just put it on the other side of it,

ur nova is too clean to start with! my bay used to be full of rust and it was a k-reg. im sure ur nova used to be a 1.6 16v?

olly, drop the engine out (easy) and get the bay blasted, otherwise it will never be 100% which i know is what your after

olly a dremal simply is'nt pwoerfull enough to go what you want

the other way of getting ti smmoth and removing the stonechip of what ever is in the bay is to get a proper drill with a scothbrite attactment (from brownbrothers etc), that will be 100 times better
