i have put the car into my garage today and am going to see if the gear linkage is the problem. i have pulled the plug off the top and put a screw in to lock the linkage in place. it has went down about an inch. is this far enough?

should the gear linkage still be able to move once there is something in the hole at the top of the gearbox (where you pull that plastic plug out.

No, sounds like a broken linkage itself. I had it on my old 1.2 8v, where one of the blocks in he linkage itself had split, but Vauxhall don't sell parts for it, only a full linkage.
I ended up getting one from www.breakeryeard.com, cost me £26 delivered. When that was fitted it all worked perfectly again.
If you can reach the linkage input on the gearbox, try moving that around while you push the drill bit into the hole in the gearbox. You should feel it drop into place, and the input should stop moving, even if the whole linkage doesn't.

Are you sure you're using the correct size drill bit?

Try using a 4mm drill bit, at least you will feel if it drops into place properly.

Form what you said about you keep missing gears though, I would definitely say its a broken linkage.

Try to look along the entire linkage, look for breaks in the connector blocks or damaged balljoints.

Its on the back of the box Leo, try reaching around it to the back and its about halfway down, very awkward to get to though.

There is no way you can see it, so you just have to feel around for a small round lump about 8mm wide, thats the top of the plug.

You will prob have to use pliers to pull it out though.

So you found the correct place on the gearbox?

Sorry about the spring, my old Corsa didn't have one.

When you locked the linkage this time, did the drill bit go in further? and did the linkage still move when it was locked into place this time?

you dont use the drill bit with my gearbox, it has a bit already on it for pushing in to lock the selector.

i dont no if its because something in the diff is rattling about or if the gearbox is just fucked.

Ok, but when you locked the selector, did the linkage still move about? because if it did, I would say it is either a problem with the locking part, or the linkage is damaged.
