How much technical car knowledge do you think you would need to make one of these? Does anyone know how much you can pick one up for second hand or best/worst models?

Cheers!

to build a kit, you need to be pretty good but it has instructions, unlike most projects

to build one from scratch, very cleaver

Building one is easy if you have some spanners and some time, and can read.

Cheaper and easier buying one already done. People will try and tell you different, but trust me, ive looked.

Westfield Megabusa's go for £11k - £15k, dependant upon age, etc.

Cheap ones can be had for about £4-5k with a C20XE on carbs pushing around the 180bhp figure, which when combined with the torque from an xe, should be fun i'd imagine.

Cossie ones go for around £11-13k, or there are some 4wd ones about for sale at the moment

My dads mate built an MK indy over 2 years (one in my avatar) and he'd never done anything like it before! Just follow the instructions and if you get stuck on ask on a forum!!

Most kits say that about 8 weeks is average for a build, for a normal person, with average skill.

Ask away

I work for a caterham race team

Uk and European champs in 2006

I by myself can build a caterham in about 4 days, thats from the kit arriving to the car being loaded onto a trailer running.

Caterhams are by far the easiest, westfield dax etc are all pretty much the same!

If you want something that will handle like a kart, and be easy to upgrade then caterham is the one you want. Budget 15k though for a R300 or SVR this will be more than enough for the road. Older narrow track caterhams with the pinto or 1600 k series known as the roadsport are about 10k!

Westfields are not far off, chassis isnt bad, engine packages are good too.

It all depends on your budget, what you want and if its a new build or not.

We built the first of the caterham csr's for caterham along with all LHD models. WIthoug blowing our own trumpet id say you would struggle to find a better caterham than one we have built with our extensive race knowledge and experience!

In response to the Dax CCR front suspension.

Yes the idea is extremely good, however the dax isnt rose jointed or rod ends like the caterham. The csr with inboard front suspension and independant rear is by far the most simple and effective!

Hence why the CSR has the TOP GEAR lap record

So, an amalgamation of suspension bits from Dax and Caterham, would be immense.

It just amazes me how simple an idea it is, and how it can work to keep the wheels level whatever the circumstances, even if it's not that great in practise

The dax CCR is a superb idea, it works the bollocks as well

The whole bike engined chassis is mega yes, but no where near the rigidity and setup depth of a caterham.

The CSR with inboard front susp, via a rocker arm design works well the CSR as a whole package is incredible.

£40k yes, however its faster round oulton park, brands, donnington than a race spec porsche 911 gt3 as found in the carrera cup.

If we could enter a aero equipped caterham in the brittish GT i have no doubt in the fact it will beat the DBR9, Porsches, Ascari, Mosller. The panoz and 360 are such good cars they would walk it!
