Just been reading the rules on numberplates, and I just want a clarification on something as I am a little confuzled...
The only legislation that applies are the ones which apply to the size of the text, the font used and the ammount of plate that needs to be surrounding the letters right? Not to the actual size of the plate right? So you can legally make a plate smaller if you only have a 5 character long registration mark, for example?

Correct.
Hence those plates with 1cm of plastic round the letters, and nothing else.

I'm not having a dig here, but whats the objective in doing this? Alot of people do it, but I have never seen the point myself.

Just looks neater if you have a shorter plate, no objective really

water leak? heh?
and i agree with davey, completely and utterly stupidly pointless. Take it, this is on the punto? wouldnt bother, unless you're getting the bumper changed

Subtle styling - small touches can make a big difference

The numberplate is just stuck on to the bumper on my new car. The numberplate is only 5 letters long so on the front I think it might look a bit neater if I trim off the white space on either side of it. Will probably do it on a spare plate as I know somone who can get me a plate done for next to nothing so all good

remember that you need to have the BSAU stamp and a postcode on there, and they're normally at the edges.

Water won't get through because the back of the plate is sticky and it it's cut carefully (I.E. on a band saw) then it won't be disturbed.

Oh right, I've always thought that it looked rather shoddy as the plate looks too small for the recess, especially on corsa's and its also like begging to be pulled over in the coppers understanding.

Because number plates are ugly enough as it is so making them smaller helps get rid of them! I cut both the front and rear down on both mine and my girlfriends car, looks much better and fits int he recess better.

Cheers, the company i work for uses composite materials including plastic, so cutting down some plates is a breeze.
