I knw theres a rule of thumb that a the longer one is either positive or negative jus wanted some help on this cos i dont have the connector

On the larger one +ive is the centre terminal and -ive is the outer terminal which is atatched to the outer casing.

The smaller one looking at it, as you said the longer terminal is +ive and shorter terminal seems to be earthing itself on the cig lighter, so must be -ive.
