First of all ringtones are gay.
But phones don't really come with a normal "ring ring" anymore so you have to either use one of the standard ones (usually crap/embarrasing), or use a mp3 of a song.
So you put on a song, head down the pub & have a pint. Your phone goes off, then your mates phone does, then another mates goes off.....All the same song 
It does my head in, its almot a girly thing to do. "Im wearing this tonight, so make sure you wear that so we go together". Or like dressing twins the same, or wearing the same as a mate on a night out
Its just gay beyond all points of homo-ness & I think its for fags.
Rant over.
PS- Having your phone on silent might help you but I don't care. Thats for fags too.

mine would always be on silent, I felt embarrassed when my phone went off for some reason

Choose an MP3 that you know your mates wont have.
eg. im the only big Ashcroft fan in my group, so mins is 'Break the night with colour'. 
the thing i hate about ringtones is when it rings and the MP3 starts playing, you cant listen to the whole song
