you can, but its not worth it, you won't notice a difference.
look in my garage, when i had the 1.6 (black cam cover) I had no airpump, but you need to leave the valve thing on the manifold, and the plug needs to stay connected.

if you remove it, there's a hole in the manifold, which pisses exhaust gasses out 
its only really worth removing if you are on a weight saving mission
|

You can take the lot out and the hole left can bo blanked off by a piece of sheet metal put behind the manifold and gun gummed on,then tighten the threaded bolts back up.

robin when u say leave the plug connected are u on about the one on the pump? if so how do u leave it connected if nothings there?

erm, theres 2 plugs if you trace the wiring back, and one of them needs leaving, the one which isn't connected to the pump.

think so, can't really remember now, it's been a while since i had that engine 
in this pic, there's a loose green plug

that must have been the one I unplugged I guess.
