no its a dvd recorder with a built in hard drive. so when u want to record something instead of putting a dvd disc in to recorder like normal dvd recorders it records directly onto the hard drive. if u then want to keep a hard copy of what u have recorded u can transfer it onto a dvd disc.

E.G. u want to record Top Gear. it records on to Hard Drive. Then if u want to keep that episode u burn it to disc and ease it off the hard drive.

The Hard Drive hold upto 248hours worth of recording and it can 'pause live tv' as well
