I've always wanted to go to japan, and always wanted to go to australia and new zealand, but the cost of flights are
A friend of mine is currently doing a year long round the world trip where he is stopping all over the globe.
This got me thinking about doing something similar, but I was thinking the cost of flights alone must come to £4000 +
Spoke to my mate, and he explained you could get a round the world trip ticket, which stops in countries of your choice and that you can depart or arrive at each stop whenever you please (essentially).
The crazy thing is, these sort of tickets cost £600ish?
A single return flight to sydney australia from UK is over £1000 normally!
Yet I inputted that I wanted to fly to New York, the Los Angeles, then New Zealand, then Australia, then japan and then home.
The price came to £700?
And you can take each flight when you want? That's crazy in my opinion. Obviously all the costs of accomidation and stuff would be high, and you'd be looking to spend a fair whack over all, but I don't understand why the flights are so cheap compared to what they'd normally be? Considering your travelling like 25,000 miles.
Plus if I was to do this I'd be tempted to make my own way across some places. So like when I got to New York, make my own way down to Florida, then do route 66 or something all the way to L.A, check Las vegas, and san franisco. Then take off to australia lol.
What am I missing? where's the catch? I doubt I'd do one for a whole year, but say 4 months or something would be awesome, I'd budget like £4000-£5000?

Not got a clue...
Any small print?
Perhaps its because your serving them more than what someone would be doing just going from one country then home again?

Also some people may say my choice of locations are rather boring - and that why don't I choose to back pack it across africa, india, russia and china.
Well because I don't want to get mugged / die.

I just noticed prices don't include taxes, not sure how much they would be?
I did London to New York, to Los Angeles, to Sydney for under £600

You get a OneWorld ticket, you turn up to the airport and hope to go somone has missed thier flight. You aren't booked onto a flight ever, hence they practicly give these things away...

As Ed said; you're not guaranteed a seat on a specific flight. You turn upto the airport in the hope that there is a seat free. At the end of the day an airline will always try to fill all of its seats and if it can sell un-used seats cheap its better than lettting them go unused

Long haul flights are rarely full so it works out nicely.
Our flight to Australia was barely half full..... or half empty, whatever way you look at it...

Ah that makes sense There's my answer! thanks
Hmm, I see why they do it now, and I see why it's cheap, but still if your doing a trip essentially travelling for a unspecified period of time anywhere whenever you like, it's not such a pain if you can't leave right away i.e. have to wait for a flight that's got a space.
Though as nath says, long haul flights should have a space every now and then.

Honestly our flight to Australia was so empty I had a whole row of seats to myself, and I just laid across all 4 seats and fell asleep
It did slowly fill when we stopped in Bahrain and Singapore but still wasn't full.
