Right heres me problem..
Started work for this ASM company (doing helpdesk support) but after a just over a month of this i have found that i really dont like it.. However the pay is rather nice @ £24k BUT its 24/7 support so we dont get any time off apart from booked holiday, which is 20days a year. (so no time off over Xmas and New Year)
now i can go to work for the company i was temping at BKL. which i enjoyed and they do have a proper holiday over the Xmas period. Its more Desktop Support with a little networking involved too..
HOWEVER.. the pay is a lot lower with the chance after a few months to go up a bit then after a year go up to what im on now.
Starting pay of 18-19k to then go up to 20-21k after a 3 month training period. Then staying on £20k for a long while then going up to £24k
Now i can learn a lot more of the server and network side of things at BKL.. and i cant do this at ASM.
What would you do ?? Cos i like money but i also dont want to not like the job im in

Tough doing a job you don't enjoy but £6k is one hell of a pay drop!

If you can afford to get by on the lower wages at BKL for upto a year (if the payrise is guarenteed) then go for that as it sounds like you'd prefer that job and it has better long term prospects.

its only a year on the lower money then?
If so take the other job you temped at. You'll enjoy it more, and you'll get that extra training you mentioned. Its def the better job for the future

take it then.
You'll only get fed up of the other job and quit sometime in the future, so better to move now and take the less pay this year than in the future.

I would do something you will gain experience in for a few years. Especially if it's a better enviroment to work in. Take the lower packet for a while then move onto bigger and better things...

Id rather do a job I enjoyed for less than a job i hated for more.
Long term seems better to go for the lower paid job Steve.

Our heldesk peopel are on like £26k if your interested....
8-8, but 1 week every 9 is on call (you get paid an allowence on top of wages, plus a rate).....
Xmas is just on-call cover, luck of the draw who gets it..
Currently full of contractors while im seconded onto a new project role, but if they think im going back........
Failing that, get on Jobserve, got all my roles on there.

Edit - Helpdesk as in 1st line and 2nd line. 1 week on the phone, next week on walkabout, next on the phone, next on walkabout etc.
Will be more jobs available as we rollout our worldwide project as well..

Desktop support (2nd line).
Phone Support (1st line).
Central City of London (City district, Tower 42, Gurkin, St Pauls, area (well Moorgate)).
Not drivable unless you have a bike
I.e your on 2nd line one week, 1st line the following week, then back on 2nd line, then back on 1st etc etc... But chance to progress on which is what i've done.

Works out to roughly £330 a month difference after tax... What do you currently do with the £330? Can you live without it?
Have you had an interview yet? Maybe you could haggle your salary if they offer you the job?

Remeber that's only for 3 months though, then it goes down to £250 (20k), or £180 (21k). Personally, job satisfaction, and knowing your hours are 9-5, are much more important than a couple of huindred quid a month!
Figures are from http://www.i-resign.com/uk/financialcentre/tax_calculator.asp BTW!
